A Life Less Ordinary

He was an ordinary man
He lived an ordinary life
A life devoid of any risk
And lacking any colour
Trims his moustache, combs his hair
Looks in the mirror…no one’s there
Dons the tweed suit lying there
Before heading down the high street.

He was an ordinary man
He lived a neat and ordered life
Each day passing without fuss
Each day like ev’ry other
Reads his paper, sips his tea
Fills out the crossword patiently
Dreams of things that cannot be
Where on earth does the time fly?

Ch: There was a time in younger days
When skies were blue, not shades of grey
When passions played in wonderous ways
and he … less wary To risk love with it’s extremes
To take a chance, live out his dreams
Of a life … A life less ordinary

He was an ordinary man
In a paint by numbers world
A life routine and free of stress
But lacking any purpose
Sees the couples hand in hand
As they walk barefoot in the sand
Smiles to himself, ain’t love grand
Heading homeward as the sun sets

He was an ordinary man
He lived a sad and lonely life
Breathing in and breathing out
Just going through the motions
Dusts the mantle, sweeps the hall
Stares at her portrait on the wall
It’s twenty years… come this fall
Some day soon he thinks he’ll join her.
